Why Goulburn? 

Although not an established wine area the Goulburn region is idealy suited to the growing of wine grapes. We were looking for a cool climate area with limestone soils, as we believe this combination is the best for producing the style of wines we like, and this is what we found only 7 kilometers from the centre of the Goulburn on the Crookwell Road.

Located between the Canberra and the Southern Highland Geographical Indicator regions, our climate more closely resembles that of Canberra, as we are less humid than the Southern Highlands.

There are a number of small wineries and grape growers in the district. Although currently there are too few of us to apply to become an officially recognised wine GI region, we have combined to form the Merino Country Vignerons Association.

You are most welcome to come and visit us when you pass through Goulburn - we are open every weekend from 10 am to 5 pm, and most other days, but please phone first on weekdays.

Howard and Elly Spark

Vineyard - Winery - Bottling - Cellar Door

We are a complete vineyard-to-bottle wine making operation, with all aspects of the wine making process being done on site. Howard is our viticulturalist and winemaker, while Elly is the gofer.

After many years working as an engineer on major civil and mining construction projects, Howard decided to follow his interests in wine making and went back to university during the 90s and obtained Diplomas in Viticulture and Oenology. He is passionate about a wholistic approach, seeing the wine making process through from grape to bottle. It has been an exciting 10 year journey from the first planting of baby vines to being able to consistently produce award winning wines. A major achievement for such a small winery.

Elly is still working as a Senior Meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology in Sydney, and juggles her career there and with helping out at Kingsdale.

Kingsdale Wines

Kingsdale is a boutique vineyard and winery, situated adjacent to Lake Sooley on the Southern Tablelands of NSW near the historic city of Goulburn. It is about a 2 hour drive south of Sydney and a 1 hour drive north of Canberra. The property is 700 m above sea level and enjoys a fresh mountain climate with mild summers and cool winters.

Our wines are available from our cellar door, at local outlets and restaurants or by mail order.
